Remove the valve cover.

Typical Example
Use Tooling (A) to move the rocker arms away from pushrods (1). Remove pushrods (1).

Install Tooling (B) on the valve lifter. Remove valve lifter (2) from the block.

Remove spring guide (3) from the valve lifter.
Repeat Steps 1 through 3 again for the other valve lifters and pushrods, if necessary. Installation Procedure

Illustration 4 g00790023Note: When the valve lifter is removed from the machine, a new spring guide must be installed on the valve lifter.
Install spring guide (3) on the valve lifter.

Install the valve lifter on Tooling (C). View the illustration. Ensure that spring guide (3) is in position in the groove (slot) in the valve lifter.

Use a soft hammer to install Tooling (D) over spring guide (3). Ensure that the groove in Tooling (D) is in alignment with spring guide (3).

Typical Example
Put clean engine oil on valve lifter (2). Use Tooling (D) to install the valve lifter in the engine block. Ensure that the end of the spring guide is in alignment with the small hole in the block.
When the valve lifter is in position in the block, use Tooling (E) to push the valve lifter off Tooling (E).

Typical Example
Put pushrod (1) in position in the block. Use Tooling (A) to move the rocker arm away from the pushrod. Install pushrod (1) into position under the rocker arm. End By:
