Numerous inputs inform the electronic control module (ECM) of the status of the conditions of the machine. Two types of inputs exist. There are switch inputs and there are sensor inputs. Switches provide an open signal, a grounded signal, or a positive battery signal to the inputs of the ECM. Sensors provide a signal to the ECM that changes in a proportional manner in order to reflect changing machine conditions.Electronic Control Module
The electronic control module (ECM) is the main component of the power train electronic control system. The ECM makes decisions based on input information and memory information. Then, the corresponding response is made through the outputs. Information for the Power Train Electronic Control System is shown on the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The ECM sends the information to the Caterpillar Monitoring System via the CAT data link.Electrical Output Components
The power train ECM responds to decisions by sending electrical signals through the various outputs. The outputs are pulse width modulated. The ECM operates the pulse width modulated outputs in an on/off manner or in a proportional manner. This depends on the requirements of the output device. The outputs create an action or the outputs provide information.Data Link
The CAT data link is used to communicate with other control modules on the machine. The data link is bidirectional. The bidirectional data link allows the electronic control module (ECM) to send data. The bidirectional data link allows the electronic control module (ECM) to receive data. The data link allows information to be shared with other electronic control modules.Transmission Control Valve
The transmission control valve provides the proper flow and pressure in order to engage the desired transmission clutches. The transmission control valve contains the following major components:

Priority Reducing Valve
Modulation Reducing Valves
Proportional Solenoid ValvesTransmission
The motor graders that are covered in this manual are equipped with a countershaft transmission. The transmission has eight forward speeds and six reverse speeds. The transmission is electronically controlled and hydraulically actuated. The electronic control module activates the solenoids that control hydraulic flow to the clutch packs.Differential and Bevel Gear
The differential and bevel gear is used to transfer power from the transmission to the final drives. The differential allows the wheels to turn at different rates of speed when the machine is going through a turn. The differential can be locked by the differential lock valve.Final Drive and Tandem Drive
The final drive is used to transfer power to the wheels. The
