Remove the boom cylinder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Boom Cylinder - Remove".Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

Typical Example
Put the boom cylinder on Tooling (A). The weight of the boom cylinder is approximately 331 kg (730 lb).
Remove grease fitting (20) from cylinder assembly (1) .
Remove any debris from the threaded hole for the lubrication line (21) .
Remove eight bolts (13) that hold head (19) to cylinder assembly (1) .
Use tooling (A) to slide rod assembly (12) out of cylinder assembly (1) .
Remove ring (5), seal assembly (4) and ring (3) from the piston (6) .
Remove the ring (26), ring (28), stop (29), and ring (27) from rod assembly (12) .
Use Tooling (B) to remove locknut (2) that holds piston (6) to rod assembly (12) .
Remove piston (6), stop (8) and ring (7) from the rod assembly (12) .
Install eight bolts (13) that hold head (19) to cylinder assembly (1). Pull cylinder assembly (1) and head (19) as a unit from rod assembly (12) .
Remove eight bolts (13). Remove the head (19) from the cylinder assembly (1) .
