Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. The fuel will not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts. The fuel system should be primed prior to starting the engine.
Spin-On Filter
Raise the hood. The primary fuel filter is on the right side of the machine.

Open drain valve (2) on the bottom of water separator. Allow the water and the fuel to drain into a suitable container.
Disconnect the wiring to the water in fuel sensor probe (3).
Use a strap type wrench to remove the primary fuel filter (1).
Remove the water in fuel sensor probe from the filter element
Install the water in fuel sensor probe into the new filter element
Apply a thin coat of clean diesel fuel to the seal on the new filter. Install the new fuel filter hand tight until the seal of the fuel filter contacts the base. Note the position of the index marks on the filter in relation to a fixed point on the filter base.Note: There are rotation index marks on the fuel filter that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn away from each other. When you tighten the fuel filter, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
Tighten the filter according to the instructions that are printed on the filter. Use the index marks as a guide. For non-Caterpillar filters, use the instructions that are provided with the filter.Note: Use a Caterpillar strap wrench to turn the filter. Ensure that the installation tool does not damage the filter.
Reconnect the water in fuel sensor probe wiring.Note: The water separator element is under suction during normal engine operation. Tighten the drain valve securely to prevent air leakage into the fuel system.
Prime the fuel system to fill the water separator element with fuel.Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for the correct procedure.
Close the hood.Cartridge Filter
Raise the hood. The primary fuel filter is on the right side of the machine.
Clean around the primary fuel filter housing and base. Inspect for any leakage between the filter housing and filter base in the area of the threads. Fuel leakage at this interface may indicate damage or contamination in the threads.

Disconnect the WIF (water in fuel) sensor at the connector and loosen clipping points as needed to allow sensor and pigtail to be removed with the filter housing.
