(2) Inertia weight The viscous damper consists of a casing that is welded to the inner hub. The casing contains the inertia weight that is suspended in a viscous silicone lubricant. The silicone lubricant acts as a flexible coupling between the weight and the inner hub.Combustion forces cause torsional vibrations in the crankshaft. The torsional vibration is caused by the regular power impacts along the length of the crankshaft. These vibrations will damage the crankshaft and various other engine components. In order to reduce the effects of the torsional vibrations, a vibration damper is installed on the front end of the crankshaft. The vibration damper absorbs the torsional vibrations. The damper reduces the possibility of damage to the crankshaft and engine components from these vibrations.
