Remove the front swing motor, or remove the rear swing motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Swing Motor - Remove".Note: The removal procedure is identical for both swing drives. Only the front drive is removed in the following procedure.Note: Thoroughly clean the area around the swing drive prior to removal.Note: Put identification marks on the swing drive in order to mark the drive's location for installation purposes.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Open shutoff valve (1) in order to drain the oil from swing drive (2) into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of swing drive (2) is approximately 19 L (5 US gal).

Use Tooling (A) in order to remove bolts (3) and the washers that hold swing drive (2) to the upper frame.
Remove the cork from the two threaded holes in the swing drive housing. Install Tooling (C) in each threaded hole in the swing drive housing. Slowly tighten one forcing bolt for a few turns. Tighten the other forcing bolt for a few turns. Alternate between the forcing bolts in this manner in order to separate swing drive (2) from the main frame.

Fasten Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to swing drive (2). Remove swing drive (2) from the machine. The weight of swing drive (2) is approximately 503 kg (1110 lb).
