LIFTING EYE 1P8654 - Caterpillar

Applying heat to a tank which has held flammable liquids, even when "empty", can result in the residual flammable liquid or vapor igniting with explosive force. This can result in injury or death. DO NOT weld or flame cut on any tank that has held flammable liquid without taking the proper precautions. See the July 2, 1990 Service magazine article, "Welding On Fuel And Hydraulic Tanks".
1. Fabricate two each of Plates 1 and 2 and one Plate 3 using the dimensions given in Illustrations 1, 2 and 3. Use 5.0 mm (.20 in) thick mild steel to fabricate the plates.

Weld Plates (1) to the sides of the tank using a 3.0 mm (.12 in) fillet weld all around as shown in Illustration 4. It is not necessary to gouge out and reweld cracks in the weld between the base plate notch and side walls. After the fabricated plates have been welded in place, the welds around Plates (1 and 2) will form the tank seam. These welds must be oil tight and capable of withstanding 35 kPa (5 psi).

Weld Plate (3) to the bottom of the hydraulic tank using the dimensions given in Illustration 5. On D25D, D30D and D350D Articulated Trucks, the fender must be trimmed to clear Plate 1 on the hydraulic tank. Put the repaired hydraulic tank in position and remove material from the fender as needed. On D40D and D400D Articulated Trucks, the lower mounting hardware for the fender must be relocated. The mounting hardware will not fit in the original hole after the hydraulic tank has been repaired. Put the hydraulic tank in place and drill a hole in the fender and hydraulic tank and fasten them together with the original bolt.
