Schematic of the Emulsion Pump Relay
This diagnostic code is associated with the Emulsion Pump Relay. The FMI 06 means that the Option ECM has detected that the current for the relay circuit is above normal. The following conditions could cause this diagnostic code to be activated:
The energize circuit of the relay is shorted to a ground source.
The relay has failed.
The Option ECM has failed. The failure of the Option ECM is unlikely. System Response:A Level 1 warning is generated.Note: Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean and secure. Verify that all connections in the circuit are in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. After making any possible fix to the circuit, attempt to actuate the relay in order to determine if the Diagnostic Code still exists. Some Diagnostic Codes may not display until the engine is running.Test Step 1. CHECK THE RELAY
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
Observe the status of the diagnostic code.
Disconnect the relay from the machine harness. Expected Result:The active CID 3898 FMI 06 diagnostic code changes to a CID 3898 FMI 05 diagnostic code when the relay is disconnected. Results:
YES - The active CID 3898 FMI 06 diagnostic code changes to a CID 3898 FMI 05 diagnostic code when the relay is disconnected. The relay circuit in the machine harness is correct.Repair: The relay has failed. Repeat this test "CHECK THE RELAY" in order to verify the relay failure. Replace the relay.STOP
NO - The CID 3898 FMI 06 diagnostic code remains active. Disconnecting the relay did not change the status of the active diagnostic code. The relay is not causing the problem. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE ENERGIZE CIRCUIT OF THE RELAY FOR A SHORTThe relay remains disconnected from the machine harness.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness connector from the Option ECM.
At the machine harness Option ECM connectors, measure the resistance from the signal contact C2-9 (wire C936-GY(Grey)) to frame ground. Measure the resistance from the signal contact C2-9 (wire C936-GY(Grey)) to all of the other contacts that are used in Option ECM connector.
While observing the multimeter resistance measurements, wiggle the machine harness connector for the Option ECM and the relay. Gently pull on the wires and move the wires all around. Expected Result:Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms at all times during the manipulation of the harness and connectors. Results:
OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - One or more of the resistance measurements is less than 5000 ohms. The resistance measurement is indicating that
