Caterpillar Digital MultimeterUse 6V7070 Digital Multimeter or equivalent for making continuity checks or voltage measurements. For instruction on use of the 6V7070, see Special Instruction SEHS7734. 7X1710 Cable Probe Group is used to make measurements at connectors without disconnecting them. Use of continuity testers (such as 8T0500), or voltage testers (such as 5P7277) are not recommended for use on present-day Caterpillar electrical circuits, except for harness tests when the harness is disconnected from the machine at both ends.Fault Conditions
Before troubleshooting, ensure that a fault does exist. See the machine Operation & Maintenance Manual for proper machine operation information.Use the following procedure when a fault is detected. When a fault is detected, the diagnostic indicator FLASHES the codes. See the topic Faults Detected By The Control in the Testing And Adjusting section1. The faults are shown on the diagnostic indicator by flashing the indicator ON and OFF. The flashing represents a two digit code number. There is a series of flashes that represent the first digit, followed by about a one second pause, then a series of flashes representing the second digit. Count the number of flashes to determine each digit. A pause of about three seconds separates each two digit code.2. To troubleshoot the fault, see the topic Faults Detected By The Control. Troubleshooting Procedures:
Go to the procedure which corresponds to the fault code shown on the control diagnostic indicator.An easy check of the solenoid circuit can be done by placing a steel washer next to the solenoid. When the solenoid is energized it becomes magnetic. The washer should be attracted to the energized solenoid.Fault Code: 12
This fault is recorded when the control senses the solenoid circuit has an open or is shorted to +battery.1. CHECK FOR SOLENOID BEING ACTIVATED - Using a steel washer, determine if the solenoid is activated.* Solenoid is activated; harness is shorted to +battery or correct. Go to Step 2.* Solenoid is NOT activated; harness is open. Go to Step 3.2. CHECK FOR SHORT TO +BATTERY - Disconnect the machine harness connector from the control. Check for continuity from the solenoid output circuit (contact 3) to +battery (contact 1). Turn the various power circuits (headlights, heater etc.) OFF and ON during this test to check for a short from these circuits to the solenoid output circuit.* There is NOT continuity; solenoid harness is not shorted to +battery.
