(1) Torque for 12 bolts ... 24 2 lb. ft.(30 3 N m)(2) 8J6298 Spring; Length under test force ... 1.91 in.(48.5 mm)Test force ... 145 12 lb.(645 53 N)Free length after test ... 2.80 in.(71.1 mm)Outside diameter ... 1.93 in.(49.0 mm)(3) Clearance, slipper to plate ... .003 .001 in.(0.08 0.03 mm) Use shims (4) for adjustment.Bearing Adjustment
1. Put oil on all moving parts before turning shaft.2. Use a torque wrench and turn the shaft. Torque needed to start the shaft turning must not be more than 10 lb.ft. (14 N m). Torque needed to keep the shaft turning must not be more than 7 lb.ft. (10 N m)3. Put a dial indicator in a position to read the axial movement of the shaft.4. Turn the shaft back and forth about 40° several times.5. Adjust the indicator to read zero.6. Push on the shaft with 300 lb. (1300 N) force.7. Turn the shaft back and forth about 40°. Be sure the indicator is in contact with the shaft at the same place as in Step 4. Write down the indicator reading.8. Remove the force. Turn the shaft back and forth about 40°. The indicator must read zero.9. If the indicator does not read zero do Steps 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 again.10. The indicator reading Step 6 must not be more than .014 in. (0.36 mm). If less than .002 in. (0.05 mm) do the following procedure.11. Install .010 in. (0.25 mm) shims between the body and the head. Tighten the head bolts to a torque of 24 2 lb.ft. (30 3 N m).12. Turn the shaft back and forth about 40° and set the indicator on zero.13. Push on the end of the shaft with 300 lb. (1300 N) force.14. Turn the shaft back and forth about 40°. Be sure the indicator is in contact with the shaft at the same place as in Step 12. Write down the indicator reading.15. Remove the force from the end of the shaft. Turn the shaft back and forth about 40°. Indicator must read zero at the same point of contact used in Step 12.16. If the indicator does not read zero, do Steps 12, 13, 14 and 15 again.17. The indicator reading in Step 14 must be at least .010 in. (0.25 mm).18. Remove the shims installed in Step 11 and tighten the head bolts to a torque of 24 2 lb.ft. (30 3 N m).
