Information:
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Escaping fluid under pressure, even a pinhole size leak, can penetrate body tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Torque Converter Operation

(5) Lockup Clutch The torque converter is mechanically connected to the engine flywheel with a flexplate (1). The torque converter provides a hydraulic connection between the engine and the transmission and is used to increase the torque as the torque load on the machine increases. This is called Torque Converter Drive Mode and is employed when operating in lower gears and when climbing a grade. When torque loads are low, the Transmission/Chassis ECM will engage the Lockup Clutch (5), which then provides a mechanical connection between the engine and transmission. This is Direct Drive Mode and is more fuel efficient and reduces power loss to a minimum, when conditions allow. When ENGAGED, the lockup clutch provides the Direct Drive Mode. The lockup clutch is engaged during transmission shifts to allow a smooth transition between gears. either mode transfers power to the transmission via the torque converter Output Shaft (3)The torque converter inlet relief valve directs oil from the transmission scavenge pump into the torque converter Inlet (2). The torque converter inlet relief valve protects the components of the torque converter by limiting the maximum oil pressure to the torque converter during pressure spikes in the system and when the engine is started and the oil is cold.Oil exiting the torque converter flows through the Outlet (4) to the torque converter outlet relief valve. The torque converter outlet relief valve
