Remove the covers for flywheel (1) and opening (2) on the right rear side of the flywheel housing.

Flywheel timing marks
Install the 9S-9082 Engine Turning Tool into opening (2). Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation and observe the timing marks on the flywheel. Turn the crankshaft until the zero degree timing mark ("0°") is directly under the pointer for the timing marks on the flywheel. Note: If you turn the flywheel past the "0°" timing mark, turn the flywheel in the reverse direction. Turn the flywheel for 30 degrees past the "0°" mark in order to compensate for the gear lash. Then turn the crankshaft until the zero degree timing mark ("0°") is reached again.
Remove the valve cover. Ensure that the valves of the No. 1 cylinder are in the closed position. If the No. 1 cylinder is on the compression stroke, the valves are closed. You will be able to move the rocker arms up and down by hand.If the valves are not closed, the number one piston is not in the TC position on the compression stroke. If the valves are not closed, proceed to Step 4.Note: Perform Step 4 only if the rocker arms cannot be moved.
Rotate the flywheel in the direction of engine rotation for an additional 360 degrees. If both valves are now closed then the number one piston is at the TC position. Note: If you turn the flywheel past the "0°" timing mark, turn the flywheel in the reverse direction. Turn the flywheel for 30 degrees past the "0°" mark in order to compensate for the gear lash. Then turn the crankshaft until the zero degree timing mark ("0°") is reached again.
