Information:
3054 (6FK, 5YS) Industrial, 3054 (4ZK, 2PW) Generator Set EnginesReference: SENR5542, Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, 3054 and 3056 Diesel Engines, "Fuel Lift Pump Pressure Test".The fuel lift pump on 3054 Engines functions both as a fuel priming pump and a fuel transfer pump. Low fuel pressure and starting difficulty may be indications of problems with the fuel lift pump.
The staking of the pivot pin on the 121-3220 Lift Pump Assembly has been strengthened. This will improve reliability and durability of the pump. The part number of the assembly has not changed.
The improved fuel lift pump can be identified by the date code which is stamped on the bottom flange of the pump. The change includes lift pumps with date codes of 6K01 and later. The date code 6K01 represents October 1, 1996.
Interpreting The Date Code
The date code uses four characters to express the year, month, and day of manufacture. The date code is interpreted in the following manner:
1. The first position digit represents the year of manufacture. For example, "5" is for 1995, "6" is for 1996, "7" is for 1997, etc.2. The second position character represents the month. See the chart. 3. The third and fourth position digits represent the day of the month. Example: 6K01
The "6" is for 1996.The "K" is for OctoberThe "01" is for the first day of the month.Inspecting The Fuel Lift Pump
Use the following procedure to verify the condition of a fuel lift pump:
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over any fuel system components that are disconnected.
1. Check the fuel pressure from the pump according to the Reference instructions.A pump that is functioning properly will deliver pressure of 14 to 67 kPa (6 to 10 psi).
(1) Location of date code(2) Strainer(3) Cover and seal2. If the fuel pressure is low, remove cover and seal (3) and inspect strainer (2) for debris.Clean the cover, the seal, and the strainer with nonflammable solvent. Carefully wash any sediment from the chamber of the pump.
Ensure that the cover of the fuel lift pump is secure so that air does not enter the fuel system.
Assemble the clean, dry pump.
(4) Pivot pin3. Check the fuel pressure again. If the pressure remains low, remove the pump and inspect the staking of pivot pin (4).If the staking has failed, install a new 121-3220 Lift Pump Assembly. Make sure that the new pump has a date code of 6K01 or later.
The following conditions indicate that the fuel lift pump is probably not a problem:
* The strainer is clean* The pivot pin is staked properly* The pump has a date code of 6K01 or laterIf these conditions are met, inspect the fuel system for other problems such as a loose fitting, a plugged fuel filter, etc.
