Caterpillar has developed a weld operation to apply carbide particles to the wear surface of Caterpillar Ground Engaging Tools (GET). This process is also applied to other parts where the process would be beneficial. Although the weld bead is made with general filler wire, the carbide particles are held in place to resist tool wear. The application, known as Abrasion Resistant Material (ARM), is intended for high abrasion and low to medium impact loads. When working in fine, loose material, the operation increases the life of GET components by a factor of five or more times. High impact loads, such as large rocks or chunks of concrete, may cause the beads to break off the surface of the piece.This guideline provides a list of required equipment and outlines the procedure recommended by Caterpillar. Also included are miscellaneous process tips gathered from experience. The choice of equipment will affect the investment required to set up the operation.Important Safety Information
