Torque Converters, Transmissions, and Final DrivesReman transmissions and torque converters have improved corrosion protection to prevent rusting of unpainted surfaces during shipment and storage. The addition of Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) oil to the test oil creates a vapor action which inhibits oxidation in the internal compartments. Additionally, "Noxrust" contact type rust inhibitor is brushed onto unpainted flange surfaces that are not protected by the VCI. The previous process consisted of spraying a contact type rust preventative on those surfaces, but the rust preventative had to be diluted to a 50 percent concentration to allow spray application.
Torque converters have an additional measure of protection since the rotating torque converter compartment is more open than the transmission compartment. A sheet of VCI paper is wrapped between the rotating torque converter and the external housing to provide increased vapor protection. These improvements were implemented May 11, 1999 on serial number T9287.
Reman final drive groups have also undergone changes to provide corrosion protection for unpainted surfaces during shipment and storage. The addition of Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) oil to the test oil for Track-Type Tractor and Wheel Loader final drives and the spraying of VCI oil into the final drive compartments of Off-Highway Truck final drives, creates a vapor action in the internal compartments which inhibits oxidation. "Noxrust" contact type rust inhibitor is sprayed onto unpainted flange surfaces that are not protected by the VCI. The previous process consisted of spraying a contact type rust preventative into the final drive, but the rust preventative had to contact the surface to be effective. These improvements were implemented April 29, 1999 on serial number 17081.
