Install Tooling (M) into housing (1). Install bearing cone (5), washer (4), and nut (3). Tighten nut (3) until there is no backlash.

Rotate housing (1).
Install Tooling (C) and (D). Install caps (7) and bolts (8) .
Use Tooling (C), (D) and (E) in order to measure the distance to Tooling (M) .
Measure depth from Tooling (C) to the bottom of the hole in Tooling (M). Record the measurement as Measurement (X) .

Measurement (V) is stamped on the head end of pinion (9) .
Use the following formula in order to calculate Measurement (S) : Measurement (S) = X - V mm.
Among the available list of shims, choose the shim with the thickness of Measurement (S) .

Remove bolts (7), bearing caps (8), Tooling (C), and Tooling (D). Remove nut (3), washer (4), and bearing cone (5). Remove Tooling (M) and bearing cone (6) .

Install the suitable shim or shims (16) that measure the thickness of Measurement (S) onto pinion shaft (14). Install shim (16) with the chamfer against the gear.
Raise the temperature of bearing cone (15) and install bearing cone (15) onto pinion shaft (14).
Install washer (13) to pinion (14) .
Install a new shim (12) to pinion (14). Note: Shim (12) is a collapsible shim and the shim can not be reused.
Install washer (11) to pinion (14) .

Install pinion (14) to housing (1) .
Install bearing (10) to pinion (14) .

Install nut (17) and the washer to pinion (14) .
Use Tooling (J) and Tooling (K) to tighten nut (17). Rotate pinion (14) in order to ensure that the bearings are seated.

Use Tooling (J) with a torque wrench in order to set the rotating torque. Tighten nut (17) to a rotating torque of 1.6 N m (14.16 lb in) to 2.3 N m (20.36 lb in).

Lock retaining nut (17) by peening the collar in the slot on pinion shaft (14) .

Install seal (22). Use Tooling (A) .

Install plate (20) to housing (21). Use a sealer on plate (20) .
Install bolts (19) to plate (20) .
Install retaining ring (18). Use Tooling (B) .Alternate Method

Hold the flange (A) .
Attach a spring scale to a bolt hole in the housing (B) .
Pull the spring scale at end (C) until the housing begins to rotate. The preload should be 9.2 kg to 13.8 kg (20.28 lb to 30.42 lb). Also, ensure that the housing rotates smoothly.
