This Special Instruction contains the necessary information that is required to properly repair specific Caterpillar bit holders that are damaged or worn. Every effort has been made in order to provide the most current information that is known to Caterpillar. Continuing improvement and advancement of product design might have caused changes to your product which are not included in this publication. This special instruction must be used with the latest technical information that is available from Caterpiller.
Personal injury or death can result from fumes, gases and ultraviolet rays from the weld arc.Welding can cause fumes, burn skin and produce ultraviolet rays.Keep your head out of the fumes. Use ventilation, exhaust at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing area. Replacement Procedure

Install new bit (3) into bit holder (4) before the bit holder is removed.
Position plate steel (1) in front of the point of bit (3). Refer to Illustration 1.
Mark the point of contact (2) on the plate.
Keep the point of bit (3) on the mark and tack weld plate (1) in place.
Draw line (5) on the wheel parallel to the base of bit holder (4) .
Remove bit holder (4) from the wheel.
Remove new bit (3) from bit holder (4) .
Install the new bit into the replacement bit holder.
Use the mark on the plate steel and the line on the wheel in order to position the replacement bit holder.
Weld the replacement bit holder to the wheel.
