Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the differential and bevel gear and of the axle housing. Replace O-ring seals with new parts.

Install O-ring seal (14) on the differential and bevel gear.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to differential and bevel gear (13). The weight of differential and bevel gear (13) is approximately 816 kg (1800 lb).
Use Tooling (A) and the suitable lifting device in order to install differential and bevel gear (13) in the axle housing.

Install bolts (12). Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 300 30 N m (221 22 lb ft). Then, tighten bolts (12) for an additional 120° 10°.

Position bracket (10) and all of the tubes as one unit.
Install bolts (9) in order to fasten bracket (10) to the differential and bevel gear. Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 300 30 N m (221 22 lb ft). Then, tighten bolts (9) for an additional 120° 10°.
Connect tube assemblies (7) and (8) to each service brake.
Connect clips (11) to tube assemblies (7) and (8).

Install guard assemblies (6) on the rear axle assembly.

Install O-ring seal (5) on pin (4).
Lubricate pin (4) and O-ring seal (5) with the oil that is being sealed. Install pin (4) in the axle housing.

Install cover (1) without shims.
Install bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2) enough to remove the end play between pin (4) (not shown) and cover (1).
Use Tooling (B) in order to measure the gap between cover (1) and the axle housing. Record this measurement. Use this measurement to determine the correct thickness of required shims.
Install a thickness of shims that will establish a −0.03 mm (−0.001 inch) preload to a 0.03 mm (0.001 inch) end play in pin (4) (not shown).

Install cover (1) with the measured amount of shims (3). Install bolts (2). End By:
Install the front support for the rear axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Trunnion Support (Oscillating Axle, Front) - Install".
Install the axle shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove and Install".
Install the axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oscillating Axle (Rear) - Install" or, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fixed Axle (Front) - Remove and Install".
