This diagnostic trouble code is associated with the torque converter oil temperature sensor. The FMI 16 means that the ECU has determined that the oil temperature is above a normal operational range. The temperature could cause severe damage. The ECU reads the resistance from the sensor. A high oil temperature will send a low voltage to the ECU. The high temperature sends a voltage that is lower than the expected result for the ECU.Conditions Which Generate This Code:The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code. Codes Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Investigate Vehicle Operation
A. Verify if low gear high load operation is typical. Result: Extended operations with high initial rolling loads in 1st gear is not frequent
Repair: Proceed to next step
Result: Extended operations with high initial rolling loads are frequent in 1st gear.
Repair: Transmission ECM programming should be changed to allow "operator requested first forward gear lockup clutch enable status" for either manual activation or "High Power train Load First Forward Gear Lockup Clutch Enable Status" for automatic activation under periods of extended operations with high loads in low gears. Refer to "Electronics Programming Guide" WEGT1000.
3. Check the Transmission Oil Level Level Result: The transmission oil level is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The transmission oil level is incorrect.
Repair: Add or remove transmission oil to proper level.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check the Temperature of the Transmission Oil Cooler
A. Check for high coolant temperature. Temperature Result: The coolant temperature is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5
Result: The coolant temperature is high.
Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting , "Coolant Temperature is High", for additional information.
5. Check Lockup Clutch Operation
A. Check for a functioning Lockup Clutch ECPC valve by operating vehicle in 3rd gear or higher
B. Verify lock up clutch pressure. Refer to Test and Adjust , Modulating Valve-Test and Test and Adjust , Torque Converter Lockup Clutch Does Not Engage Result: Lock up clutch pressure is within 2137 69 kPa (310 10 psi) is functioning properly
Proceed to next step
Lock up clutch pressure is not within the specified range of 2137 69 kPa (310 10 psi)
6. Check Torque Converter Inlet Pressure Relief Valve Relief Valve Result: The pressure relief valve is OK.
Result: The pressure relief valve is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace the pressure relief valve.
If the problem is not resolved, contact your Dealer TC to submit a DSN. Test Step 1. INSPECT THE SENSORPerform a visual inspection of the sensor, the wiring
