The torque converter is made up of a rotating housing (1), impeller (2), output shaft (5), stator (8) and turbine (9). The output shaft (5) also acts as the transmission input shaft.Oil for the operation of the torque converter comes from the oil pump for the transmission. The inlet oil pressure to the torque converter is controlled by a valve in the transmission hydraulic controls.The outlet oil pressure from the torque converter is controlled by an orifice in oil outlet passage (6) .Oil from the oil pump for the transmission flows through transmission hydraulic controls to inlet oil passage (3) .Oil from the torque converter leaves through oil outlet passage (6) .Operation
Rotating housing (1) has splines which are engaged with splines of the engine flywheel. Impeller (2) is connected to rotating housing (1) which is bolted to the gear. All three rotate as one unit. Turbine (9) is connected by splines to output shaft (5). Stator (8) is connected to carrier assembly (4). Carrier assembly (4) is connected to rotating housing (1) for the torque converter. The stator (8) and carrier assembly (4) do not rotate. Output shaft (5) is connected by splines to the transmission.Oil for operation of the torque converter flows through inlet passage (3) in carrier assembly (4) to impeller (2). The rotation of impeller (2) gives force to the oil. Impeller (2) sends the oil toward the outside of impeller (2), around the inside of rotating housing (1) and to turbine (9). The oil hits the blades of turbine (9). The force of the oil that hits the turbine blades causes turbine (9) to rotate. The turbine (9) rotates output shaft (5). At this point, the torque on turbine (9) is not more than the torque output of the engine. This torque is given to turbine (9) by the force of the oil from the impeller (2) .As the oil flows from the turbine blades, the oil moves against the rotation of impeller (2). Stator (8) causes the oil to change direction. Since the stator (8) is connected to carrier assembly (4), stator (8) does not rotate. Due to this fact, most of the oil is sent back to impeller (2). The remainder of the oil flows from the stator (8) through outlet passage (6) to the lubrication system. As turbine (9) rotates, output shaft (5) rotates and output shaft (5) sends torque to the input side of the transmission.The force of the oil from the stator (8) now adds with the torque output from the engine to the impeller (2).
