Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
This test is designed to tell if a pump is operating within the design parameters. For any pump test, the pump flow at 690 kPa (100 psi) will be larger than the pump flow at 6900 kPa (1000 psi) if the pump is operating at the same rpm. The pump flow is measured in L/min (US gpm). The difference between the pump flow of two operating pressures at the same rpm is the flow loss.Test on the Machine
Install a hydraulic flow tester on the machine. Record the pump flow at 1000 rpm and 690 kPa (100 psi). Record the pump flow at 1000 rpm and 6900 kPa (1000 psi). To calculate the flow loss, use the formula in Table 1. Run the engine at full load rpm and record the pump flow at 690 kPa (100 psi). Use these values in the following formula.
Table 1
Method for determining flow loss
Pump flow at 1000 rpm and 690 kPa (100 psi)
− Pump flow at 1000 rpm and 6900 kPa (1000 psi)
= Flow loss (L/min or US gpm)
Table 2
Method for determining percent of flow loss on the machine
Flow loss (L/min or US gpm) × 100 = Percent of flow loss
Pump flow at full load rpm and 690 kPa (100 psi) If the percent of flow loss is greater than 10%, the pump performance is inadequate.Test on the Bench
Record the pump flow at 1000 rpm and 690 kPa (100 psi). Record the pump flow at 1000 rpm and 6900 kPa (1000 psi). To calculate the flow loss, use the formula in Table 3. Run the test bench at 2000 rpm and record the pump flow at 690 kPa (100 psi). Use these values in the following formula.
Table 3
Method for determining flow loss
Pump flow at 1000 rpm and 690 kPa (100 psi)
− Pump flow at 1000 rpm and 6900 kPa (1000 psi)
= Flow loss (L/min or US gpm)
Table 4
Method for determining percent of flow loss on the bench
Flow loss (L/min or US gpm) × 100 = Percent of flow loss
Pump flow at 2000 rpm and 690 kPa (100 psi) If the percent of flow loss is greater than 10%, the pump performance is inadequate.
