The two HP settings are provided by different methods on the two models.
On the 960F, there is a separate Dual-HP solenoid, and also a fuel shutdown solenoid. The Dual-HP solenoid is controlled by the Transmission Control and the shutdown solenoid is controlled by the key start switch and the starter circuit - see schematic.
960F Dual Horsepower CircuitOn the 970F, a dual-function solenoid is used, controlling both the High/Low HP setting, and fuel shutoff. The dual-function solenoid has two coils, one controlled by the Transmission Control and one by the Engine Shutdown Control - see schematic.
970F Dual Horsepower Circuit Component Description
960F - 9X6800 Solenoid Gp:
This is a single coil solenoid that is energized to provide High HP. The resistance of the coil is about 18 to 25 ohms at room temperature and will increase somewhat at higher temperatures. Note that a continuous duty solenoid will always become hot during operation. This does not necessarily indicate solenoid failure. Make a resistance check with the 6V7070 (or equivalent) Digital Multimeter to determine if a solenoid is good.
970F - 3E6424 Solenoid Gp:
This solenoid has two separate coils, and one Sure-Seal connector for each. The Sure-Seal PLUG is connected to the Dual-HP coil and the Sure-Seal RECEPTACLE is connected to the shutoff coil.
The Dual-HP coil is a continuous duty coil and has a resistance of about 14 to 18 ohms at room temperature. The resistance will increase with higher temperatures.
The shutoff coil is an intermittent-duty coil, as it is powered only for a short time at the time of shutoff. It's resistance is about 4 Ohms at room temperature and will also increase with higher temperatures.
