Illustration 1 g06009108Schematic of the Swing Right SolenoidThis diagnostic code is associated with the Swing Right solenoid. The FMI 05 diagnostic code means that the Machine ECM detected the current is below normal. The possible causes of this failure are listed here:
The solenoid energizer circuit is open.
The return circuit of the solenoid is open.
The solenoid has failed.
The Machine ECM has failed. This condition is unlikely. When this failure occurs, a warning is displayed on the operator monitor and the Machine ECM disables the circuit.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these failures when the original failure is corrected.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. DO NOT start the engine.
Disconnect the suspect solenoid from the machine harness.
At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper between contact 1 (wire X781-GN(Green)) and contact 2 (wire H765-BR(Brown)).
Observe the operator monitor or monitor the circuit using Cat® ET.Expected Result:The diagnostic code alternates between the active status and the inactive status as the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed. The operator monitor may take several seconds before the diagnostic information is updated. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code alternates between the active status and the inactive status as the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed. The circuit is correct.Repair: Replace the solenoid.STOP
NO - The failure is constant as the jumper wire is manipulated. The harness or the Machine ECM have failed. Proceed to test step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE HARNESS FOR OPENS.
The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
The machine harness remains disconnected from the Cat® Grade Control ECM and the Swing Right solenoid.
At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper between contact 1 and contact 2.
At the machine harness connector, measure the resistance from the wire 1 (X781-GN(Green)) to wire 2 (H765-BR(Brown)).Expected Result:The resistance measures less than 5 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance measures less than 5 ohms. The circuit is correct. Proceed to test step 3.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. There is an open in the circuit.Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.
Inspect the connectors and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Clear all active diagnostic codes.
Operate the machine.
Check the operator monitor for an active diagnostic code.Expected Result:The diagnostic code for the solenoid is not present. Results:
OK - The diagnostic code for the solenoid is not present. The failure was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or an open at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
NOT OK - The failure has not been corrected. The Machine ECM has failed. A failure of the ECM is unlikely. Exit this test procedure and perform this procedure again.Repair: If the cause of the failure is
