When the machine is turning, the differential allows the inside wheel to turn at a slower rate than the outside wheel. The differential still sends the same amount of torque to each wheel.Bevel pinion (1) is connected to the yoke. The yoke assembly is connected to a universal joint from the output transfer gears. The bevel pinion is connected to the yoke assembly by splines. The bevel pinion is engaged with bevel gear (15). The bevel gear is fastened to the differential group. Differential carrier (23) is fastened to axle housing (5) .The differential group has differential cases (12) and (22). Bevel gear (15) is fastened to differential case (12). Differential case (12) is fastened to differential case (22) by bolts (13). The following components are included inside the differential group.

Side gear (18) Spider (24) is installed between differential cases (12) and (22). When the differential cases are turned, the spider turns. Pinions (17) are installed on the spider. The pinions are engaged with the teeth of side gears (10) and (18). The axle shafts are connected to the side gears by splines. The side gears turn against thrust washers (11) and (19). The pinions turn on bearing (16) and thrust washer (14) .Nut (2) is used to adjust the end play (bearing preload) of bearings (4) and (6). Shims (7) are used to adjust the tooth contact (wear pattern) between bevel pinion (1) and bevel gear (15). Adjustment rings (9) and (20) are used to adjust the free movement (backlash) between bevel pinion (1) and bevel gear (15). The adjustment rings are also used to adjust the bearing preload of bearings (8) and (21). Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Differential and Bevel Gear - Adjust" for the adjustment procedure for the differential and bevel gear.The inside components of the differential receives lubrication from the oil inside the differential. The flat surfaces on spider (24) allow oil flow to bearing (16). The supply for lubrication oil is a reservoir in the axle housing (5) .Straight FORWARD or REVERSE
When the machine moves in a straight direction with the same amount of traction under each drive wheel, the same amount of torque on each axle holds pinions (17) so spider (24) does not turn.Bevel pinion (1) turns bevel gear (15).
