Starting Motor
The starting motor is a device used to rotate the flywheel of an engine fast enough to start the engine.

When the starting motor starts to rotate, the drive assembly forces the pinion into engagement with the ring gear on the engine flywheel. The starting motor rotates the flywheel. When the engine starts, the flywheel rotates the starting motor pinion faster than the armature and now the drive assembly moves the pinion out of engagement with the ring gear.The starting motor used with direct electric start incorporates a solenoid. The action of the solenoid engages the pinion with the ring gear on the engine flywheel, when the solenoid is energized. The pinion always engages before the electric contacts in the solenoid closes the circuit between the battery and the starting motor. An overrunning clutch protects the starting motor from being overspeeded. Release the start switch to disengage the pinion from the ring gear on the flywheel.Circuit Breaker
The circuit breaker is a safety switch that opens the battery circuit whenever the current in the electrical system exceeds the rating of the circuit breaker.A heat sensitive metal disc with a contact point completes the electric circuit through the circuit breaker. Excessive high current in the electric system promotes heat in the metal disc. Heat distorts the disc, causing the contacts to open. An open circuit breaker can be reset after it is allowed to cool. Push the reset button to close the contacts.

A magneto generates electricity for the spark plugs in the starting engine. The basic components of a magneto are:A transformer with a heavy wire primary coil with relatively few windings when compared with the number of fine wire windings in the secondary coil that is wound around the primary in the same direction.A contact breaker which is actuated by a cam on the rotor shaft.A rotor which is a permanent magnet.A condenser shunted across the contact breaker.A distributor which contains a contact and is driven by the rotor shaft.All magneto components are in a housing that has a removable distributor cap.
MAGNETO COMPONENTSWhen the rpm of a magneto increases, the spark at the spark plug electrodes intensifies. An impulse coupling is used on the drive end to increase rotor rpm momentarily when the engine is being cranked. The trip arm, that actuates the impulse, will disengage when the engine driving the magneto starts to operate.
