ASPHALT PAVER,
Information:
Clean the Cooling System Relief Valve
Clean or replace the relief valve if the system overheats or loss of coolant is observed. There are two valves to be cleaned. One on the tractor engine radiator and one on the scraper engine radiator.1. Unlatch and open the hood to gain access to the valve.2. Remove the bolts from the valve and remove the valve assembly. 3. Inspect valve (1), valve seal (2) and gasket (3). Replace the valve assembly, gasket and seals if they are damaged.4. Inspect the relief valve cover and mounting bolts.5. Install the valve assembly and mounting bolts.Filling the Radiator
All water is corrosive at engine operating temperatures. Use a Caterpillar coolant conditioner element to treat either plain water or ethylene glycol solution.Do not use Caterpillar coolant conditioner elements with Dowtherm 209 Full-Fill coolant. Follow recommendations provided with Dowtherm 209 Full-Fill coolant. If the machine is to be shipped to, or stored in, an area with temperatures below 0°C (32°F), the cooling system must be protected to the lowest expected ambient temperature.Clean the cooling system if it is contaminated, if engine overheats or if foaming is observed in the radiator.
Use clean water that is low in scale forming minerals - not softened water. Measure the specific gravity of the antifreeze solution frequently in cold weather to ensure adequate protection.1. 621E - Change the coolant conditioner element. See the topic "Cooling System - Changing Coolant Conditioner Element" under "Every 250 Service Hours or Monthly."2. 627E - Do not completely fill the cooling systems. Allow for addition of Caterpillar cooling system conditioner.Mix the antifreeze solution to provide protection to the lowest expected outside temperature. See "Refill Capacities." To help avoid locks, add coolant slowly, at 20 liters (5 U.S. gallons) per minute or less. Fill the radiator to the indicator plate in the fill pipe.627E - Add 1.9 liters (2 quarts) of Caterpillar cooling system conditioner or equivalent.3. Start and run the engine with the radiator cap removed. Allow the coolant to warm and the level to stabilize. Add coolant if necessary. Stop the engine. Check for leaks. 4. Inspect the radiator cap gasket. Replace the gasket if it is damaged. Install the cap.627E
Repeat the procedures in the same sequence for the scraper engine cooling system.Engine Valve Lash
Adjust
To prevent possible injury, do not use the starter motor to turn the flywheel.Hot engine components can cause burns. Allow additional time for the engine to cool before measuring valve clearance.
Measure the valve lash with the engine stopped. To obtain an accurate measurement, allow at least 20 minutes for the valves to cool to engine cylinder head and block temperature.
Adjust the valve clearance to within 0.08 mm (.003 in) of the nominal clearance given.621E Tractor
Refer to the Service Manual or your Caterpillar dealer for the complete valve adjustment procedure. After setting valve clearances and before installing the valve cover, check valve rotators. See next topic.627E Tractor and Scraper Engine
