Torque for the nuts (not shown) that hold bearing caps (5) and (16) to the differential carrier ... 520 50 lb. ft.(700 70 N m)Torque for the studs (not shown) that hold bearing caps (5) and (16) to the differential carrier ... 320 30 lb. ft.(435 40 N m)(11) Torque for the bolts that hold cage to carrier ... 75 5 lb. ft.(100 7 N m)(13) Torque for the nuts that hold bevel gear to the differential case ... 320 10 lb. ft.(435 14 N m)Adjustment Procedure For The Bevel Pinion Bearings:
1. Install the bearings (1) and (3) on pinion (2) and then install pinion in the carrier.2. Install cage (6) and shims (12). Do not install the seal (8) and "O" ring seal (10) in cage (6) until after the adjustment is made. Turn the pinion slowly while the adjustment is being made.3. Use shims (12) as necessary behind cage (6) to put enough preload on the pinion bearings so the torque needed to turn the pinion (2) is more than 35 lb. in. (4.0 N m).4. Turn the pinion several revolutions. Change thickness of shims (12) so that a torque of 35 5 lb. in. (4.0 0.6 N m) is needed to rotate pinion.5. Install "O" ring seal (10) with lubricant on seal on cage (6). Install oil seal (8) in cage (6) with lubricant on the lip of seal (8). The lip of seal (8) must be toward bearing (1). Hand tighten bolts (11) to a torque of 75 5 lb. ft. (100 7 N m).Adjustment Procedure For Free Movement (Backlash) Between The Bevel Pinion And The Bevel Gear:
1. Install gears (14) in the differential case. Turn the gears. The torque needed to turn gears (14) must not be more than ... 25 lb. ft.(35 N m)2. Install the differential assembly in the carrier.3. Install the bearing caps (5) and (16) and nuts. At this time, do not tighten the nuts to full torque.4. Put the carrier in a position so the center-line for the axles is vertical and the teeth of
