Troubleshooting Test Steps Value Results
1. Diagnostic Codes
A. Establish communitcation with Cat ET. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools" for more information.
B. Check for active diagnostic codes.
Codes
Result: Diagnostic codes are present.
Troubleshoot any active diagnostic codes before continuing with this procedure.
Result: No diagnostic codes are present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Air Inlet and Exhaust System
A. Check for air inlet restrictions and/or leaks.
B. Check for leaks between the manifold and the turbocharger.
C. Check for exhaust restrictions.
Refer to Systems Operaton/Testing and Adjusting for more information on inspecting the air inlet and exhaust system.
Leaks or restrictions
Result: No leaks or restictions are present in the air inlet and the exhaust system.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: Leaks or restrictions are present in the air inlet and the exhaust system.
Make the neccessary repairs. Verify that the problem is resolved.
3. Fuel Injectors
A. Perform the "Injector Solenoid Test". Observe that the injector solenoids are being energized on Cat ET.
B. Perform the "Cylinder Cutout Test".
Injectors
Result: The tests were successful.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The tests were not successful.
Replace the suspect injector. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly.
4. Aftercooler (if applicable)
Normal intake manifold pressure with high exhaust temperature can be caused by blockage in the aftercooler.
A. Check for blockage in the cores of the aftercooler. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Aftercooler - Test".
Result: The aftercooler is NOT blocked.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The aftercooler is blocked.
Removed the blockage. Verify that the problem is resolved.
5. Exhaust Temperature Sensor
Use Cat ET in order to check the status of the exhaust temperature.
A. Start the engine.
B. Use Cat ET to monitor the status of the exhaust temperature while the engine is warming to operating temperature.
C. Ensure that the reading that is displayed is reasonable.
Sensor
Result: The exhaust temperature displays a reasonable reading.
Result: The exhaust temperature reading is NOT reasonable.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (PWM) - Test" for information that is related to troubleshooting the circuit that is for the exhaust temperature sensor.
