Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publications SENR5664 and NEDG5065 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh.Do not smoke while working on air conditioning systems. INHALING REFRIGERANT R-134A THROUGH ANY SMOKING MATERIAL, ALTHOUGH NOT TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE, CAN GENERATE LETHAL PHOSGENE GAS AND CAUSE VIOLENT ILLNESS OR DEATH. ALSO, HEAT MUST NEVER BE APPLIED TO A CHARGED SYSTEM. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR5664, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
1. Purge the air conditioning system. See the topic "Purging The System" located in the Air Conditioning & Heating Service Manual, SENR5664. 2. Remove 19 bolts (3) and the washers that hold guard (1) to cowling assembly (2). Remove guard (1) from cowling assembly (2). For photographic reasons the cowling assembly has been removed.3. Disconnect two hose assemblies (6) and (7) from air conditioning condenser (5).4. Remove four bolts (4), the nuts and the washers that hold air conditioning condenser (5) to the radiator. Remove air conditioning condenser (5) from the machine. The following steps are for the installation of the air conditioning condenser. For photographic reasons the cowling assembly has been removed.5. Put air conditioning condenser (5) in position on the radiator. Install four bolts (4), the nuts and the washers that hold air conditioning condenser (5) to the radiator.6. Check the O-ring seals for wear or damage, and replace if necessary. Put the O-ring seals in position on hose assemblies (6) and (7). Connect two hose assemblies (6) and (7) to air conditioning condenser (5). 7. Put guard (1) in position on cowling assembly (2). Install 19 bolts (3) and the washers that hold guard (1) to cowling assembly (2).8. See the topic "Charging the Air Conditioning System" in Air Conditioning & Heating Systems With R-134a Refrigerant Service Manual, SENR5664, for the correct procedure for charging the system.
