This Illustration shows the letter designation of 3612 camshaft journals.
Illustration 8 g00615568
This Illustration shows the letter designation of 3616 camshaft journals.
Before assembly, check the location of the dowel and the height of each camshaft journal. Refer to Specifications, "Camshaft" for the assembled height of each dowel. Note: Install the camshaft journals with the locating groove toward the front of the engine for both standard rotation engines and reverse rotation engines.Install the camshaft segments in the orientation that was noted during removal.Note: Engine rotation is observed from the flywheel end of the engine.

Apply clean engine oil to the rear camshaft bearing.
Put spacer (14) in position on shaft assembly (11). Align the dowel in the shaft assembly with the dowel hole in the camshaft segment. Install shaft assembly (11).
Install the bolts that hold the shaft assembly to the camshaft segment. Tighten the bolts hand tight.
Install plate assembly (12) and the bolts that hold the plate assembly in position.
Install plate (13) on shaft assembly (11).

Later camshaft segments do not have spacers.
Put spacer (17) in position on camshaft journal (2).
Apply clean engine oil to camshaft journal (2). Install the camshaft journal in the camshaft bearing with the groove toward the front of the engine.
Install bolts (3) that hold the camshaft journal to the camshaft segment. Tighten the bolts hand tight.
Put spacer (15) and spacer (16) in position on the camshaft journals.
Install Tooling (A) on the side of the cylinder block. Note: Ensure that the groove on the camshaft segment is in the correct position for the rotation of the engine.
Attach a suitable lifting device to camshaft segment (4). The weight of camshaft segment (4) is approximately 30 kg (66 lb). Put the camshaft segment into position on Tooling (A).
Roll camshaft segment (4) into position on Tooling (A). Align the dowels at each end of the camshaft segment. Install bolts (1). Tighten the bolts hand tight.

Install camshaft timing pin (18) in the camshafts.
Install the timing pin in the crankshaft.
Illustration 14 g01301892
Place plate (10) in position on camshaft drive gear (5). Install bolts (7).
Apply Tooling (D) to the threads of bolt (8).
Attach a suitable lifting device to camshaft drive gear (5). The weight of camshaft drive gear (5) is approximately 35 kg (77 lb). Place camshaft drive gear (5) in position on the camshaft. Install washer (9) and bolt (8). Tighten bolt (8) by hand.
Remove the crankshaft timing pin from the crankshaft.
If only one camshaft drive gear was removed, the camshaft timing pin must be removed from the camshaft with the drive gear that was not removed before the engine is turned.
Turn the flywheel backward about 20 degrees.
If the crankshaft is turned more than 20 degrees, interference between the pistons and the valves may occur.
Turn the flywheel in the direction of the engine rotation until the crankshaft timing pin can be reinstalled in the crankshaft. This procedure holds the backlash in the timing gears in the direction of the normal engine rotation.
If you miss the location of the crankshaft timing
