Disassembly Procedure
Start By:
Remove the tie rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rods - Remove" in this manual.Note: Because of the design of the steering cylinder, the steering cylinder cannot be removed as a unit. The main housing of the steering cylinder is a cast portion of the housing for the front axle.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch.
Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" in this manual.

Disconnect the hose assemblies from the steering cylinder at locations (1). Put plugs in the ends of the hose assemblies. Put caps on the steering cylinder. Plugs and caps prevent oil loss. Plugs and caps prevent the contamination of the hydraulic system.
Remove bolts (2) from each side of the steering cylinder.
Remove guide housing (3) from each side of the steering cylinder.

Remove scraper ring (6), ring (5) and two split rings (4) from guide housing (3) .
Illustration 3 g00647163
Note: Shim (7) is used only in the guide housing that is fastened to the left side of the housing for the front axle.
Remove shim (7) from guide housing (3) .
Repeat Step 5 and Step 6 for the other guide housing.
