This will place the bevel pinion in nearly the correct position in relation to the bevel gear.Put Prussian blue, red lead, or paint in a small amount on bevel gear teeth. Turn the bevel pinion and check the marks made on the bevel gear.With no load, the correct tooth contact setting will be as shown at location (B). The area of contact starts near the toe (small end of tooth) of gear and goes about 30 percent up the length of tooth. With this setting, when load is put on gears, it will be applied over the correct area of teeth.On some gears the area of tooth contact may be extended to 80 percent of the length of the tooth when load is put on gears.If tooth contact area on either side of a tooth is near the heel of a tooth, the location of the bevel pinion shaft must be readjusted. Add or remove shims to relocate the bevel pinion shaft. Readjust the bevel gear free movement (backlash). Produce another tooth contact setting. Several adjustments of both the bevel pinion and bevel gear may be necessary before correct tooth contact setting and backlash is made. Always remember that a change in backlash will also result in a change in tooth contact setting. Therefore, be sure the free movement (backlash) is in correct adjustment before checking tooth contact setting.After correct free movement (backlash) and tooth contact setting is made, remove the extra Prussian blue, red lead, or paint from bevel gear and bevel pinion.
