Component Code(s) 670B-DRW, 7000SUBJECT: REMOVE, INSPECT, AND REINSTALL THE BOLT AND NUT FOR THE BLADES
PROBLEM:
The blade retention nut may loosen, causing the pin to fall off, therefore causing the blade to separate from the brush cutter. This may cause personal injury or death. A Safety PIP will be forthcoming.
SOLUTION:
Have the Brush Cutter removed from the carrier machine ? either a SSL or MTL. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
Remove the 3D-4904 Locknut, 271-2353 Lock washer, 264-9552 Pin and the respective blades from the Brush Cutter.
Clean the 264-9552 blade bolts, 271-2353 lock washers, and 3D-4904 lock nuts with adequate cleaner and allow hardware to dry.
In the unlikely event that any of the above items is damaged, stop the repair and contact your Technical Communicator for instructions on how to proceed.
At assembly, make certain that no oil or grease contaminates are on the bolts, lock washers, locknuts, or carrier assembly bolt interface.
Apply Quick Cure Primer 169-5464 to the bolt and nut threads as per directions on the primer label.
Apply 154-9731 (10ml) or 155-0695 (50 ml) Caterpillar Thread Locker in a circumferential band on the bolt threads in the entire target nut engagement area (first 10 threads at least) to ensure full coverage of the mating threads after tightening. Use thread locker from a new container and check the expiration date on the container.
Assemble the blade, bolt, lock washer, and nut to the carrier. Tighten to 610 ? 80 Nm (450 ? 60 ft-lb) dynamic assembly torque. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual (SEBU8150) "Blade ? Inspect/Replace"
Confirm that blades rotate freely about the blade bolts
10. Uncouple the quick disconnect fittings between the brush cutter and the host machine. Attach a "Do Not Operate" warning tag (Special Instruction SEHS7332) to the Quick Disconnect of the Brush Cutter. Allow two hours minimum cure time before operation of the Brush Cutter. 24 hours of cure time is recommended.
11. If the nut is removed anytime after the application of thread locking compound, or if the torque on the nut is less than 500Nm (370 ft-lb), remove the nut and repeat steps 6 through 10.
Disassembly after anaerobic thread locker has cured requires application of localized heat to nut and bolt to approximately 482 degrees F (250 degrees C) and disassembly of the nut while hot.
