Component Code(s) 3258, 3013SUBJECT: Problem with Gears in Axle Arrangements for Wheel Loaders and Integrated Toolcarriers
PROBLEM:
136-6551 Gear may not have been properly heat treated. This gear is part of 214-6161 Axle Ar-Fixed and 112-0723 Axle Ar-Osc. Gears that are not hardened to the proper specification will have gear teeth that wear rapidly during the early hours of operation.
SOLUTION:
If the machine has not been delivered or has operated less than 300 hours, make arrangements to remove the axles and replace the 136-6551 Gear as described in the Power Train Disassembly and Assembly (RENR4311). If the machine has been delivered and operated for 300 or more hours, inspect the magnetic plugs and take axle oil samples for the suspect machine. If there is evidence of unusual debris on the magnetic plug or iron particle counts in the oil sample are greater than 500 ppm, the machine should be removed from service and the gears replaced in the axles making the debris. If there is no evidence of an unusually large amount of debris on the magnetic plug or unusually high particle counts in the oil sample, it would indicate that the differential gears in the axle were hardened to specification. For those axles where contamination is found, it will be necessary to clean and inspect other axle components (bearings, seals, etc.) and replace components which may have been damaged due to the contamination.
