Pressurized System!Hydraulic accumulators contain gas and oil under high pressure. DO NOT disconnect lines or disassemble any component of a pressurized accumulator. All gas pre-charge must be removed from the accumulator as instructed by the service manual before servicing or disposing of the accumulator or any accumulator component.Failure to follow the instructions and warnings could result in personal injury or death.Only use dry nitrogen gas to recharge accumulators. See your Cat dealer for special equipment and detailed information for accumulator service and charging.
Personal injury or death can occur if steering is lost completely during operation.Do not continue to operate the machine using the secondary steering.If the secondary steering activates during operation, the machine must be safely shut down immediately. Inspect the machine and correct the condition which made the use of the secondary steering necessary.
Personal injury or death can occur if personnel are trapped between the wheel and the frame.The steering system is hydraulically controlled and wheels can crush personnel during movement.Use caution when working between the wheels and the frame. If the wheels must be turned, ensure that all personnel are clear of the machine before any movement.
This machine is equipped with a secondary steering system. The steering system accumulators provide a limited amount of stored hydraulic pressure for steering if the power source for the normal steering system fails or the engine stops. The secondary steering system will only provide steering until the stored hydraulic pressure is exhausted. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Operator Controls" for more information on the secondary steering system.

Illustration 2 g01442774There are two steering accumulators on the machine. Steering accumulator (1) is on the outside right frame rail near the front of the machine. Steering accumulator (2) is on the outside left frame rail near the front of the machine.
Illustration 3 g01442813Perform the following field test to verify that the secondary steering system is functional:
Empty the truck body and park the machine on a level surface. Place the transmission control in the NEUTRAL position and engage the parking brake.
When the engine is stopped with the engine start switch, check the steering hydraulic oil level. Maintain the oil to the full mark in upper sight gauge (3).
After engine start-up, check the oil level.
If the oil level registers at the full mark in lower sight gauge (4), the accumulators are properly charged.
If the oil level registers below the full mark in the lower sight gauge, check accumulator charge before proceeding to the next step. Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, KENR8316, "Off-Highway Truck Steering System" or consult your Cat dealer.
Turn the front wheels to the straight ahead position.
Chock the rear wheels and release the parking brake.

Stop the engine with ground level shutdown switch (5). This permits the accumulators to stay charged to provide stored energy for the secondary steering system when the engine is stopped.The engine shutdown switch is on the front bumper.
