Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material in the Cooling System Specifications section.
Mixing Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC) with other products reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant life. Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specifications for premixed or concentrate coolants. Use only Cat Extender with Cat ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations could result in damage to the cooling systems components.If ELC cooling system contamination occurs, refer to Operation and Maintenance, "Extended Life Coolant (ELC)" under the topic ELC Cooling System Contamination.This machine was factory filled with Cat Extended Life Coolant.
Drain the coolant whenever the coolant is dirty or whenever foaming is observed.
Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance".

Slowly loosen filler cap (1). This will relieve system pressure. Remove the filler cap.

Open drain valve (2). Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
Close the drain valve. Fill the system with clean water and a 6 to 10% concentration of cooling system cleaner.
Start the engine and operate the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.
When the engine is stopped, flush the system with water until the draining water is clear. Drain the water into a suitable container.
Close the drain valves.
Add the coolant solution. Refer to Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Cooling System Specifications" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)".Note: If you are using Caterpillar antifreeze, do not add the supplemental coolant additive at this time and/or change the element at this time.Note: Refer to Air Purge Procedure Using Cat ET for an alternate method to purge air from the system.
After the cooling system has been filled, perform the following procedures during initial start-up:
Start the engine without the filler cap.
Run the engine at low idle for 10 minutes.
Then, increase the engine speed to a high idle until the thermostat is open and the coolant level is stabilized.
Maintain the coolant at the proper level as the thermostat opens, and air is purged from the system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant Level - Check".
Install the filler cap.Bottom Fill (Optional)
The optional bottom fill method can reduce trapped air volume in filling the cooling system.Refer to Service Magazine, SEPD1844, "A Procedure to Convert to a Bottom Fill Radiator on Certain Large Off-Highway Trucks is Available" for more information to prepare the machine for the bottom fill method.
Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance".
