A field installation kit, group number 7C7466, is now available to install a 8C4770 Solenoid Group. The new 8C4770 Solenoid Group has internal electrical improvements and uses studs and nuts with hardened washers for mounting. The studs also serve as an alignment guide to ensure that the solenoid plunger fits into the governor properly (without bending). The kit contains all the required parts (except expendables) to make the repair.Reference: Parts Book and Service ManualInstallation of 7C7466 Solenoid Repair Kit
1. Refer to the Service Manual for disassembly procedure.2. Remove and discard the former 6T8021 Solenoid, gasket and mounting bolts.Installation of 7C5544 Studs
1. The 7C5544 Studs are precoated, at the factory, with a thread locking compound (on one end of each stud). 2. Install the precoated end of 7C5544 Studs (5), to the dimension shown above, into governor housing (1).
DO NOT install the 7C5544 Studs using a power tool. The governor housing and mounting hole threads could be damaged.
3. Install 2W5447 Gasket (2), 8C4770 Solenoid (3) and 5P0537 Washers (4).4. Coat the exposed end of each 7C5544 Stud (5) with a small amount of 9S3263 Compound (not included in kit) or equivalent thread locking material.5. Install 1B4330 Nuts (6) and tighten to a torque of 12 4N m (9 3 lb ft).Voltage and Current Requirements
Voltage and current requirements for the new 8C4770 Solenoid are the same as for the former 6T8021 Solenoid and should be reviewed and the wiring system modified, if necessary, to ensure dependable operation. The 8C4770 Solenoid is a 12V dual coil solenoid. This type of solenoid has one coil that pulls in the solenoid plunger and another coil that holds the plunger in the ENGINE RUN position. The pull-in coil draws 57.1 amps at 25° C (77° F) and 76.8 amps at -40° C (-40° F).The hold-in coil draws only 1.2 amps at 25° C (77° F) and 1.8 amps at -40° F).Ideally, the pull-in coil will be energized (activated) for only 0.020 seconds. However it may be energized for as long as one second because of oil, dirt and other contamination restricting the plunger movement. A slow-blow type fuse or circuit breaker must be chosen that will provide adequate circuit protection and withstand the short duration, high current situation, caused by restricted plunger movement.Solenoid Grounding Requirements
The 8C4770 Solenoid should be grounded using 14 Ga wire, to a location which provides an uninterrupted ground path. The recommended locations for grounding are on the engine cylinder block or on the vehicle frame rail, depending on which of these structures the batteries are grounded to. DO NOT use solenoid mounting studs (5), washers (4), or nuts (6) as a connection point for the ground wire.
