(3) Retarder Rotor The retarder is located between the torque converter housing and the transmission planetary case.The retarder consists of the following components: housing assembly (1), two retarder stators (2) and retarder rotor (3). The retarder operates using hydraulic pressure.The housing assembly and the retarder stators are bolted to the case for the transmission. The housing assembly and the retarder stators do not rotate. The retarder rotor is splined to the input shaft for the transmission planetary group.The resistance of the stationary retarder stators vanes to the moving oil creates a pressure that resists the rotation of the retarder rotor. Increasing pressure in the housing assembly will increase the resistance that is applied to the retarder rotor. Increasing of pressure in the housing assembly can be due to an increase in rotor speed as the machine increases momentum. Increasing of pressure in the housing assembly can also be due to an increased volume of oil in the housing assembly as the operator selects a greater amount of retarder engagement.
