Because of the quality and status of Caterpillar friction discs, competitors have been trying to duplicate the discs in appearance. A counterfeit friction disc is shown in Illustration 4. The counterfeit disc appears to have nearly identical dimensions to the genuine Caterpillar friction disc that is shown in Illustration 3. In addition, the Caterpillar name and the Caterpillar part number are stamped on the friction material of the counterfeit disc. Refer to Illustration 5. For a more positive identification, genuine Caterpillar friction discs now use a laser to engrave the disc. The friction disc is shown in Illustrations 5 and 6. Friction discs in the process of failing will cause hesitation and slippage during the change of gears. If friction discs are allowed to wear further, transmission failure could result. To help ensure a long transmission life, genuine Caterpillar friction discs should be used in Caterpillar transmissions. Having a greater surface area gives the Caterpillar friction discs a higher gripping strength during the activation of the clutch.
