Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: This is the TYPICAL procedure for the assembly of the oil filter housing.

Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily injury.To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure and wear protective equipment.
Install adapter (31) on indicator assembly (30). Install a new O-ring seal (35) on adapter (31). Apply clean engine oil to O-ring seal (35).
Install O-ring seal (36) on indicator assembly (30).
Install indicator assembly (30) in cover (1). Install the indicator assembly so that the indicator assembly will be in the correct position.
Install ring (29), the bolts, and the lockwashers.
Install spring (33) and retainer (34) on cover (1).
Install O-ring seal (32) on cover (1).

Install tubes (28) in base (25).

Install new O-ring seals (27) on housing assemblies (26). Install housing assemblies (26) on base (25).

Install Tooling (A) in the top holes of the base.
Install new O-ring seal (24) in housing (6).
Place housing (6) on Tooling (A) and slide into the original position.
Illustration 5 g00553063Note: The illustration shows the upper housing with an opening for placement of a bypass valve. There is no opening for a bypass valve on this housing.
Install new O-ring seals (18) on tubes (20). Apply clean engine oil to the O-ring seals.
Install tubes (20).
Install new O-ring seals (19) in housings (17).
Install housings (17).

Install piston (13) and spring (14) into changeover valve (12) so that retaining ring (15) can be installed.
Install O-ring seal (16) on changeover valve (12). Apply clean engine oil to O-ring seal (16). Note: The later changeover valves have additional O-ring seals. The illustration is of an earlier changeover valve.

Apply clean engine oil to changeover valve (12). Install changeover valve (12) into housing (6). Ensure that changeover valve (12) moves freely in housing (6).

Install a new O-ring seal on plate (11).
Engage the pin on tube assembly (5) with the slot in the changeover valve.
Install the bolts that hold plate (11) to housing (6).
