Remove the timing gear cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Timing Gear Cover - Remove and Install".
Remove the rocker shaft and the pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Push Rod - Remove".
Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Lifter - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Disconnect tube assembly (1) from the bottom of the turbocharger.
Remove tube assembly (1) and elbow (2) from the flywheel housing.

Remove studs (3) that hold elbow (1) on the flywheel housing.

Use Tooling (A) to turn the flywheel so that three of four bolts (4) can be removed from the rear camshaft gear. Install Tooling (B) . Remove the last bolt that holds the rear camshaft gear in place on the camshaft. Tighten Tooling (B) in order to disconnect the rear camshaft gear from the camshaft.

Remove bolts (5) and plate (6) that holds the camshaft in position in the cylinder block.

Remove camshaft (7) from the engine.

Use Tooling (C) and a suitable press to remove front camshaft gear (8) from the camshaft.
