Separate the tracks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Separate".
Remove the axles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove and Install".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Install cover (1) on the final drive. Cover (1) was removed when the axle was removed.

Adjust bracket (2) on Tooling (A) until dimension (X) is 25.4 mm (1 inch).

Fasten a hoist and Tooling (A) to final drive (3), as shown.Note: Do not remove two bolts (4) that hold the steering clutch and brake to the frame.
Remove bolts (6) that hold final drive (3) and the steering clutch to the frame.
Install Tool (B) in the end of Tool (A) in order to balance final drive (3) when bolts (5) are removed.
Remove three bolts (5). Remove final drive (3) from the machine. The weight of final drive (3) is 240 kg (530.0 lb).
Remove the O-ring seal from the steering clutch and the brake housing.
