Under certain abrasive conditions, adapter wear may result in excessive side movement of the tip. This movement can create sufficient clearance that allows the retainer to rotate out of the desired position. As the retainer rotates out of the desired position, latch (1) for the retainer unlocks and the tip falls off the adapter.

A change has been made to provide a keyway (2) in new K110 tips (3). A key (5) in the new retainer (4) will lock the retainer in position in the tips regardless of any looseness.

The tips and retainers can be used on the current adapters. However, the former parts are not interchangeable with the new parts. The former retainers cannot be used with the new tips and the former tips cannot be used with the new retainers.The new retention system may be difficult to remove in areas where severe packing occurs. Refer to Service Magazine, SEPD0821, 6 February 2006, "Correct Installation and Removal of Retainers for K Series Bucket Tips" for the removal procedures of tight retainers.To prevent the possible confusion of which retainer should go with each tip, a special kit is available. Each kit consists of the new retainer with each antirotation tip.
