Schematic Of The Relay (Air Inlet Heater)This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the current of the relay as being below normal. There is an open circuit. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
The circuit of the relay is open.
The return circuit of the relay is open.
The relay has failed.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely. Note: Ensure that CID 0617 FMI 05 is on hold. Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected.System Response:When this diagnostic code occurs, a warning is shown on the monitor. The diagnostic code will cause the air inlet heater to be turned OFF all the time.Test Step 1. CHECK THE RELAY.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
Disconnect the relay from the machine harness.
At the machine harness connector for the relay, place a jumper wire from (wire 310-PU) to (wire H807-YL).
Observe the status of the diagnostic code.Expected Result:The diagnostic code cycles between active and not active as the jumper wire is installed and removed. Results:
YES - The circuit is correct. Repair: The relay has failed. Repeat this test step "CHECK THE RELAY" in order to verify the relay failure. Replace the relay.STOP
NO - The status of the diagnostic code does not change. The diagnostic code remains active. Proceed to test step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE HARNESS FOR AN OPEN.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 and J2 from the ECM.
At the machine harness connector for the relay, place a jumper wire from (wire 310-PU) to (wire H807-YL).
At the machine harness connector, measure the resistance from signal contact J2-5 (wire 310-PU) to contact J2-4 (wire H807-YL) (return wire). Expected Result:The resistance should be less than 5.0 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance measurement is correct. Proceed to test step 3.
NOT OK - The resistance measurement is greater than 5.0 ohms.Repair: There is an open circuit in the machine harness. The open is in wire (310-PU) or in wire (H807-YL) of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.
Inspect the harness connectors and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Enter the service mode of the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and clear all inactive diagnostic codes.
Operate the machine.
Check if CID 0617 FMI 05 for the relay is present. Expected Result:The CID 0617 FMI 05 for the relay is NOT present. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code is NOT present. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation. STOP
NO - The diagnostic code
