Removal Procedure
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.Note: Put identification marks on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

Remove four bolts (2) in order to remove guard (1) from the frame assembly. Use two people to remove guard (1). The weight of guard (1) is 28 kg (61 lb).

Position a suitable container under the power train filter in order to contain hydraulic oil for storage or disposal.
Remove O-ring plug (5) and the O-ring seal from housing (4) in order to drain the hydraulic fluid. Note: Check all of the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary. Lubricate all of the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.
Install O-ring plug (5) and the O-ring seal onto housing (4) in order to prevent contamination.
In order to ease removal, loosen housing (4) prior to removing the final drive filter base (3) from the rear axle housing.

Loosen two nuts (7) (not shown) in order to disconnect wire harness (8) from filter bypass switch (6).
Remove four bolts (10), the hard washers, and two clips (9) in order to remove the final drive filter base (3) and the O-ring seals from the rear axle housing.
