Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot high oil temperature or use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active.

The engine oil temperature has exceeded the trip point and the delay time has expired.
The engine is shut down. If the engine is shut down due to a high engine oil temperature, the power to the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) must be cycled in order to restart the engine.Probable Causes

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the event code that directed to this story is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this story.
175-0
175-15
175-16
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 175-0, 175-15, or 175-16 code is present.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes

2. Check the Engine Coolant Temperature
A. Determine if a high coolant temperature condition exists.
Temperature
Result: The temperature is OK.
Result: The temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair refer to the symptom Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature Is High"injectors.
3. Check the Engine Oil Level
Level
Result: The level is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The level is NOT OK.
Repair: Add oil and repair any leaks.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
4. Check the Engine Oil Cooler Bypass Valve
A. Ensure that the bypass valve is not stuck in the open position. Clean the bore for the valve.
Inspect the components of the engine oil cooler bypass valve for damage.
Valve
Result: The valve is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The valve is NOT OK.
Repair: Free the valve or replace the valve.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
5. Check the Engine Oil Cooler Core
Check the engine oil cooler core for damage and for plugging. Clean the engine oil cooler core or replace the engine oil cooler core, if necessary.
Cooler
Result: The cooler core is NOT OK.
Repair: Clean the engine oil cooler core or replace the engine oil cooler core, if necessary.
