Remove the bull gear.

Disconnect hose assembly (1) and remove fitting (2).

Use a suitable lifting device to support the pinion shaft. Refer to Table 2 for the approximate weight of the pinion shaft. Remove bolts (3) and remove bearing housing (4).

Disconnect hose assembly (5) and remove fitting (6).

Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to support the pinion shaft. Refer to Table 2 for the approximate weight of the pinion shaft. Remove bolts (7) and remove bearing housing (8).

Position pinion shaft (9) half way out of the frame assembly. Reposition the suitable lifting device to the center of pinion shaft (9). Remove pinion shaft (9). Installation Procedure
Install pinion shaft (9) in the reverse order of removal.
Apply Tooling (B) to the threads of bolts (3) and (7) if nylock patch is not present.
Tighten bolts (3) and bolts (7) to a torque of 271 N m (200 lb ft).
Illustration 6 g03396757Note: To check total pinion travel measurement. Use a dead blow hammer to hit the pinion shaft (9) towards the left side (drive side) until travel stops. Install Tooling (C) and set Tooling (C) to zero. Hit the pinion shaft (9) back towards the dial indicator until travel stops. Note the travel and record the measurement.
Use Tooling (C) to check total pinion travel measurement. Total pinion travel tolerances are any travel measurement greater than 4.57 mm (0.180 inch).
