A typical view of a gear pump with two sections. (1) On the machines, section (1) is the implement pump. (2) On the machines, section (2) is the steering and brake pump.The gear pump is made up of two sections. Steering and brake section (2) is a gear type pump. The oil that is needed to operate the steering hydraulic system is provided by the steering section of the gear pump. The implement section (1) provides the oil that is needed to operate the bucket or the attachment. The implement section (1) also provides the oil that is needed for the attachments in the hydraulic system for the attachment.

A seal is formed by the gears against pump housing (5). As the gears turn, oil enters through inlet port (A). The oil is trapped between the teeth and the pump housing. The oil is pulled around the outside of the gears. The oil is then forced out of outlet port (B) .Both pump sections rotate on a common shaft. The steering and implement sections draw oil from the hydraulic tank through separate inlets. Each section of the gear pump has an outlet.
