The lubrication system for the generator is pressurized from an oil pump that is driven by the engine. The oil pump is driven off the rear of the lower front left accessory drive. The pump is a gear type oil pump. The oil pump pulls oil from the oil sump for the generator that is located in the rear of the sub-base. The oil sump for the generator is completely separate from the oil sump for the engine. The oil pump sends oil through a filter. The oil is then sent through an oil cooler that is located on the left side of the sub-base. There is a three-way valve that is controlled thermostatically. The thermostatic valve controls the oil flow through the generator oil cooler. The flow of oil through the generator oil cooler will depend on the temperature of the oil for the generator. The nominal setting of the thermostatic valve is 49 °C (120 °F). The thermostatic valve will start to open at an oil temperature of 43 °C (110 °F) and the thermostatic valve will be fully open at an oil temperature of 55 °C (131 °F). The oil is sent to through two orifices from the generator oil cooler. The orifices are sized in order to deliver approximately 11.4 L/min (3 US gpm) to the drive end bearing and 3.8 L/min (1 US gpm) to the nondrive end bearing. Oil will then flow from each bearing through an sight glass that is installed in-line on the oil return line that is separate for each bearing to the oil sump for the generator.Generator Prelubrication System

The generator is required to be prelube prior to each start in order to ensure adequate lubrication to each generator bearing. The manual prelubrication oil pump is mounted to the sub-base on the left side of the engine and tees into the suction line from the integral sump for the generator to the generator oil pump that is engine driven. The manual prelubrication oil pump is connected into the discharge for the generator oil pump that is driven by the engine and the generator oil cooler. The manual prelubrication oil pump for the generator should be cranked until oil flow is observed in each sight glass in the return lines for the generator bearings.
