( 1 ) Cut to a length of 100 mm (4 inch)
( 2 ) Tooling (C) was installed during the removal procedure for the Differential and Bevel Gear (Center).
Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Typical example
Remove the two plugs that blank off the two threaded holes in the top side of differential housing (3) . Install Tooling (B) into the two threaded holes. Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B) . The weight of the differential housing is approximately 280 kg (617 lb). Lift differential housing (3) onto a suitable fork lift. Position differential housing (3) under the machine.

Apply Tooling (D) to the contact surface of axle housing (6) before installing Tooling (A) (not shown). Lower a suitable lifting device between the rails of the chassis and attach the suitable lifting device to Tooling (B) .

Lift differential housing (3) into position. Slide the differential housing over Tooling (A) before pushing the differential housing into axle housing (6) .Note: When the differential housing is being pushed into the axle housing, it may be necessary to rotate the input yoke for the differential housing in order to align the splines on the internal shaft with splines in the axle housing.
Remove Tooling (B) before reinstalling the two plugs that blank off the threaded holes in differential housing (3) that were removed in step 2.

Install bolts (5) , the spacers, and the washers in order to secure differential housing (3) to axle housing (6) . Remove Tooling (A) (not shown) in order to install bolts (4) , the spacers, and the washers. Tighten bolts (5) and bolts (4) to a torque of 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft).

Connect hose (2) to differential (3) and tighten retaining nut (1) .

Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (C) . Remove Tooling (C) from the machine and lower the truck body. The weight of Tooling (C) is approximately 66 kg (146 lb)
Fill the center differential and final drives with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change".End By:
Install the parking brake. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Parking Brake - Install".
Install the center axle shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Install".
Install the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Center Drive Shaft - Remove and Install".
